What a treat to share insight into evolving technological growth. As someone who lives within cyber-Innovation, I’m passionate about how Indigenous communities are leading the charge in data sovereignty and sustainable technology. Thank you to Jake MacAndrew for the insightful interview. The recent developments in Indigenous-led data centres represent more than just economic opportunities—they’re about cultural preservation, environmental stewardship, and true technological self-determination.

Key insights I’m seeing:

Language Protection: Nearly all Indigenous languages in Canada are endangered and community-controlled data centres can prevent cultural extraction by tech giants

Sustainable Innovation: Excess heat from data centres warming community pools and centres? Let’s think differently and include community.

Data Sovereignty: When communities control their own data infrastructure, they control their narrative and their future. Many communities are starting to explore how to protect their culture and future.

This is exactly the kind of adaptable, safe approach to technology I teach—where bias mitigation and fairness aren’t afterthoughts, but foundational principles.

The future of AI isn’t just about the technology—it’s about WHO controls it and HOW it serves communities.
